| Yeah .. maybe the extension is missing... Have you tried opening a saved document with the office cd in? in case it requires something from the disc... If i remember the only time i came across a simular problem was when office wasnt fully installed. But thats already been discussed/mentioned by other users here. Try putting the office cd in the drive then open a saved document and when the installer boots in see if it does anything. MrJ

Alas the disc being in changes nothing. As for the file associations I have already looked at them and they seem to be fine. It's got me stumped? Especially as it will not let me remove/repair the office suite.

If its not the file association (try checking the registry too), then I give up! As far as a remove/reinstall is concerned, have you tried 'safe mode'?
Edit: Just thought, if you can't do a remove/reinstall of Office it suggests that your Office registry may be corrupt. Try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
If your registry IS corrupt, you may have other worries. Apart from virus/trojan attacks I'd suggest you acquire SpinRite and check your hard drive.

I'll try that app and then safe mode when the laptop next comes my way. Thanks.
