I've been messing with Rhythmbox as i have a new lightscribe burner to play with. I hit the 'Copy to library' function and the cd i was playing was copied to my hard drive as .ogg files. I'm more familiar with mp3 files myself. So do these .ogg files still play happily in all cd players when burned on a normal audio disc? Or does the burning software convert them into a universal format before burning?

Yep. If you burn the cd as an audio disc the software should convert the files back into something any cd player (that can play cd-r/cd-rw) can cope with.

If you want to fit more on you can burn a data disc as some more modern players can cope with ogg files in the same way they can play mp3's, though the support is far less widespread, so check before you try it.

Ok cool thanks. I usually burn regular audio cds as i like to play them in my car, whose inferior unit can't deal with mp3 discs. Just out of interest, is an 'mp3 disc' burned in Nero just a data disc? Cos if it is i can do that in Brasero to save the reboot.

In my experience, a CD player that can play files will play mp3 files that have simply been drag and dropped into a CD-R (or -RW)
The one in my car will even play the mp3 files as albums if you drag them onto the CD in folders.

There's a cool trick you can do with Grip which is to set it so that automatically on insertion of an audio CD it rips it to hard drive as whatever type of file and at the bitrate you want, creates a folder for the files in the location of your choosing, names and tags the folder and files then spits the CD out when it's finished.

Yes. Burning any files in Nero as a data disc leaves the file type and structure unchanged. If it starts life as an MP3, it stays as an MP3.

If you get one of those inexpensive £9-£10 DVD players from the like of Asda, you can even create and play DVDs of music files, for that all night party, you know the one that starts on Friday and finally ends on a Tuesday morning.

Just a quick word of warning regarding the above statement...

Whilst all of the budget DVD players I've played with so far are perfectly happy to play MP3 files from CD-R, none have been capable of reading the same files from DVD-R, despite having the capability of playing back MP3 soundtracks from inside XviD video from the same media. I have no idea why this is, but I thought it best to bring this up.

There's no good technical reason I can think of for it not working, so I wouldn't be surprised if Malc has found a machine that can do it. Just don't expect all of them to be capable of it.

Cheers, Slipstreem.

If you have your own PC-created test disc sometimes you can check this out before buying a specific machine, although paranoia about 'viruses' or the 'monkey effect' can prevent this.
