my friend (i promise it is a friend, not me) has just told me that his pc has had a little symble at the bottom.  he hadn't used it for a couple of years but had to get it out of the garage as his other one was playing silly buggers and was also fairly old anyway.  when i told him to hover over it it showed that it was windows updates.  i said to click it and it installed WGA which promply said the copy wasn't legit.  he always thought it was.

it gives the option for resolve now or resolve later.  if he presses resolve now, as he has a couple of times pressed resolve later so he could get on with things, what will it do?  i'd assume it will ask for the product key to do another confirmation???

it is XP i believe he said he thinks it is SP1

I don't know what it will do as i've never had that problem, what i do know is just because it failed the WGA, doesn't mean it's a dodgy copy, many legit copys have failed it hence the big uproar about the WGA.

Agree with Phitore on don't necessarily writing it off yet.

I do know that if you try to go on Windows Updates and let it do the WGA check (and it fails) it will let you resolve it for £90 (ie purchase a new key) or offer you Vista.

as it is so old he hasn't got any documents for it but if he could find his key, (is there a way of finding it from within windows?), do you think it would allow you to re-enter it incase this helps?

I think a programme named SIW (System Information Windows) would recover the Key - but whether that would help?

i have found this http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/ would it simply be a case of pressing validate on this page after ignoring the first bit ie pressing resolve latter then going here??

or would it be pressing the resolve now bit at the very beginning?  if they give you a key i would assume that you have to input it yourself somewhere

Has he got a sticker with the procuct key on it? That's the licence, effectively. If he hasn;t got one, he has no licence. A lack of a licence usually means the installation is pirate.

As said above, when you press to resolve the issue, you get the option to buy an OEM licence at full price.

Get a volume license - much cheaper - or better still get Linux.
