| Hi all. I'm trying to set up wireless on an old Dell L400 laptop running Windows 98 SE and a Netgear WG511U wireless PCMCIA card. I have installed the drivers for the card and as far as I can see so far every things running great. I have opened the netgear setup software found my network and entered the WPA-PSK key etc. and now in the taskbar I have a lovely little laptop icon which is yellow telling me I am connected(I assume). The problem is when I open IE I cannot connect to the internet. I opened tools/options/connections but im not sure what information I need to put where. Its a long time since I used '98 and I was, like most people, on dial up then and I hadn't accounted for the fact that I would have to manually setup my connection. Im sure its a simple solution but its doing my nut in! Any help much appreciated.

Tools / options / connections / should be left at never dial up.
All the boxes in Lan Settings should be empty.Do you know if you are even getting an IP address? (I suspect this may be the issue).
Start - Run - Winipcfg will tell you.

| Ok, so i tried winipcfg and it was showing an ip address although it didn't relate to anything on my router status home page ie LAN port IP address or ADSL port address (not sure which it should be, if either so i tried both), no change. When I open IE (version 5) i still get the message "no connection to internet is available". Beginning to pull my hair out now, I feel like im so close but no cigar! Any ideas?

What was the IP address?
Is it 192.168.x.y?
The x.y depends on your routers DHCP address pool, it will be something like 192.168.0.50 or 192.168.1.11

| Well I seem to have found the problem. I have my routers security set as WPA and so I chose WPA when setting up the netgear wireless adaptor in my laptop, however when I open the tab within the netgear setup software which shows me the connected networks it states my network to be WEP. Very strange. I lowered my routers security to WEP and the laptop connects no problem. I dont really want to compromise my security for the sake of getting my laptop connected though so I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the root cause of the issue?

| I had to download the netgear software on my xp machine prior to installation on the 98 laptop so it is the latest edition.

Sorted!!!
Netgear software is buggy! So had to use software from Dlinks to fix it! Instuctions outlined here for anyone else who has the same problem.
