I have a Maxtor 4D040H2 40GB 5400RPM HDD, this I have always used for my important backup files.

It's no longer recognised in any computer (master or slave). In fdisk it did let me create a primary partition, but wouldn't then let me format it. Now in fdisk it says unable to find disk 1. On dummy runs of a XP install I get to install on unpartitioned disk and it goes round in circles.

I have the same problems using Maxblast (4) on UBCD

Has it had it (dead) or anyone know of a way to revive it.

Sounds dead to me. Does it make any stange noises? My guess is it's quite an old drive (being only 40GB and running at 5,400rpm). Did you manage to get the data off before formatting?

Thanks J

I am not sure if the data is on, it did fdisk to a point but I can not seem to format it?

Fortunatly all the data is on here (the 40gb was a backup drive) so I can make another copy, when I get another 40GB, just hope nothing happens meanwhile with this and lose all my data. I do have most backed up on DVDs so all will not be lost, to keep a backup on HDD is often quicker to change untill it dies. I have no backupup of recent data though.

It does seem dead and thanks for the second oppinion, I will dismantle it, just incase there is data on.

Fdisked? It won't be straightforward to get the data off if you've done that. You'll need to use recovery software (or at least a tool that can recreate the partition details). That could put a strain on the drive, which isn't really what you want if it's already on its last legs.

What do you mean by "dismantle it"? The hard disk?

Yes the Hard disk, take the board out and use my brummy screwdriver on it.

You have a replacement board? (It probably isn't the board that's at fault, anyway.)

My maxtor hard drive died about a week and a half ago. (Developed a click of death).

My solution was to chuck it and get a new one, as it was 5-6 years old already.

If a hard drive is dead there isn't really much you can do with it. Merely opening it up can actually be counter-productive as if there was any data still there, and any dust or grease gets on the platters, it won't be there for much longer.

i think he means to open it up and sand paper (or similar) it to ensure no data can be retrieved from it
