I had some one contact me about there laptop. They were looking to upgrade it. I suggested more memory. I got them to run cpuz and they only have 512 memory. There are two slots both have 256 in. They are the same but they are not running in dual channel. The cpu is 1.8 but is only showing up as 800mhz not full speed. It is a Compaq nx6125 and has the turion proccessor ml-32. I can limit my speed through the battery sofware that came with it but there is not any on the other laptop and it is running xp. The core speed sometimes goes up to 1700 but only for a sec. The mult is 4. I have updated the bios. There are no settings to change the cpu speed so not sure why it is not running at full speed. The only thing i can think off is the memory is having an effect.

Thanks for your help!!!

It's called Cool'n'Quiet and is a power saving feature. When it is showing 800MHz, the laptop is doing nothing and so the CPU speed drops down so that it doesn't use as much power and therefore is extending the battery life of the laptop.

When you need the CPU power it goes back up to sort it out as fast as it can.

So no need to worry

So why is the memory not dual channel then unless the mother board does not support it. Just my cpu always shows max speed.

Thanks for your help!!!

with the CPU thing its not a problem. My PC is a quad core 2.4 and it uses the power saving thing to idle at around 1.4. Makes it cool and quiet!

Not sure about the ram.... ask someone cleverer than me!

I think you just answered your own question
Dual channel only really helps gaming, for anything else you won't notice the difference.

It's more likely to be a case of the CPU not supporting it, as it's an AMD CPU -- memory controller isn't on the motherboard.

The memory won't affect CPU speed. I think I know exactly how to fix this.

Sort the power options out Try the battery setting for Performance and I hope it will fix it.

Yes, we've sussed that. It's the dual-channel thing we're on now.
