it depends on the manufacturer.
i used to have a pc with software preinstalled on a recovery partition and on a recovery cd.
when i tried to install a bigger hd and used the recovery cd it refused to install, i got errors.
the only way to know is to try it.

The same thing happened to me with the dragon's Acer lappy.
In the end I gave up with XP and installed Ubuntu. Works a treat.

Those hidden 'recovery' partitions are often a special Windows 2000 installation, with machine-specific drivers so that it won't work on other machines. (Can't have people getting hold of transferable imaging software, doing folk like Norton and Acronis out of business, can we. )
As usual, a Linux LiveCD's Gparted will often see them, but not reveal or fix 'off partition' Master Boot Record or File Allocation Tables, other utilities being needed.

i had that on my laptop, however it let me make a set of restore disks that when used will put it back how it was when i first got it

in other words i can format my entire HDD and use it for vista but when i go to flog it i can put XP back on with no problems

I've never tried it, but I would have thought that cloning the whole drive would copy the hidden partition too.

Surely thats how the OEMs do it

Cheers Chris
