I realised that most of my data was backed up to my USB pen drive, so things are not as bad they seem.
Is it possible to copy the boot information from the working system to the duff one? I thought of using using a USB drive and Live CD.
It will all have to wait until much later, as I will be playing out in the garage with my nice shiny new toy all morning and I have to take Tilly Mint shopping this afternoon, as her friend no longer has a car.

Double posting, sorry.
The boot menu now seems to have resolved itself. After using my spare HH 8.04.1 drive several times I have just replaced it with my original reinstalled drive. Everything went like clock work, so I may not have to ponce about with sorting out Grub.
Thank you all who helped me.
