hi as some of u may know im new to linux (that why i keep spelling it wrong sorry ) ive used the hardy live disk and like it but it will not work on my pc (used the other rig1)so i was wondering if u can get hold of older versions of distros
p.s i will be getting more ram for my computer rig2 soon

Sounds like you have hit the big problem with Ubuntu, that the underlying kernel keeps getting changed with packages then being changed to match newer kernels instead of fixing kernel limitations. So the Ubuntu 7.10 packages are now really Ubuntu 8.04/8.04.1 packages, whilst the original 7.10 kernel is no longer 'on offer' any more. Professionally it's known as a break-down of configuration control, but it means that you may have to try a Ubuntu 8.04.1 installation (mis-labelled as still being Ubuntu 8.04) 
Ubuntu 8.10 almost has the same look and feel, but is only at Beta release and may continue to suffer from the 'big' problem, whilst Ubuntu '8.04 Long Term Support' may not settle down until the January 2009 release of the 8.04.2 version.
The different looking but more newbie friendly LinuxMint 5 (Main Edition, revision 1), at http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php seems to be under better configuration control, still using the kernel that the Ubuntu '8.04' team discarded. You might find that to be a better bet for a while. 
Meanwhile, try to avoid installing older releases of Ubuntu and 'updating' them, because that is even worse.
