Now you have me thinking.....the weekends coming up and I might just give that a go. I might even consider using mini disc as the player/recorder is smaller, though I still have to find a tape player, there must be one in the loft! This could make a neat little article David...

I've used my tape Walkman with a Spectrum 48K before. Not sure if the CD Player will work though. I hope someone gives it a try....

There has been some talk about using CD audio for Speccy games. Some people have even managed it too. I'm certain though that, as CD audio is far clearer than tape turbo loaders should be both less prone to crash and allow for a quicker load. We'll just have to wait to see if someone actually tries this theory out. Also, if you wanted to make use of an iPod, check out the news at www.raww.org ! Regards, Shaun.

There is a potential problem though. Music on a CD is digitised and digitising it means losing part of the original analogue data from the tape.
I shall give it a try when I get a chance in a few weeks time and see what happens...

I would love to find out if this experiment bears fruit. I have a collection of old Spectrum games still sitting in the loft and it would be great to know that I could save them to cd or even minidisc to even show my Grandchildren one day. (Thats if my Speccies still work) dj please post back if you get things to work on a cd or minidisc.

Pardon me for butting in on this data stream(?) but as an ancient techie, the info on tape was a sort of digital stream, modified by the tape recorder record/playback system. Most playback relied upon the play system being 'overdriven' to produce approximate 0's and 1's. IF, and I mean IF, you still have uncorrupted cassettes of your original data, it may well work brilliantly on a cd. Corruption on tapes is caused by 'bleed' of the magnetic remanence on the tape from one layer sitting upon another in the spool. The best tapes were 'chrome', as they were not so badly affected by this problem. This may or may not help the current debate

Yeah. Having looked into this the maximum data rate used on cassettes is 2000 bit/s, so to convert it to digital for a CD you'd need to sample at least 2000 times a second. CD audio uses a sampling rate of 441000 times a second, so there won't be a problem
Incidentally, a cassette only holds 660KB per side, so on a 700MB CD, you can fit about 1,000 programs!
