how can i install osx onto a g3? after many attemps to install it just wont work? i Have a g5 that came with os x Cd's but my g5 decided to die! it's still under apple care so they took it away but they still cant find a problem or get it to turn on! it's now been 5 week's with out my g5 and i'm back to using my trusty G3. i got 2 Hd in the g3 and one is no longer needed so i decided to install osX from the cd's i got with the G5 but i cant get it past the boot screen from the cd (screen where the icon goes round and round) before it locks up?

any idear's?

Have you upgraded the firmware on your G3? If not, go to the Apple site and download the latest version. Also, do you have at least 128Mb of onboard RAM? If not, you need a bit more. Finally, if you got your copy of OS X with the G5, you might find it's not compatible with the G3 machine, though copies of X bought over the counter work on any compatible Mac.

To be able to run OSX on an old G3 or G4, you must have the latest version of OS 9 before installing it...it should work after that. Like Ian said, 128mb is the minimum requirement of RAM.

You should find the following website very useful.

Good luck.

Are you using an off-the-shelf version of OS X, or the copy that came with your G5? If it's the latter, you can't install it on anything other the machine it was supplied with.

Have apple given your G5 back yet?

There are some bugs around with OSX but if your G3 is a 233 or 266, then it won't load as below 300MHz the OSX is not really designed to work

Go to www.os9forever.com and download OS9 helper with the program XpostFacto, with these tools plus downloading 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 you can get almost anything to go X

Ihave with success, upgraded here at home, Starmax, 4400, UMax SF900 and other clones, PM 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600 units with anything from 150 to 350MHz processors to run on OSX. Works all OK with 10.0.1, through to 10.3 but have yet to try and push the 9600 with 1024Mb ram and an XLR8 G3-400 upgrade to go to Tigger

Try this site, you should be gently enlightened
