Hi Simon
There are a lot of Bad Boys out there (or just a few pushing their wares with too much time on their hands).
Some members can track down a port scanner to their ISP and regional location...?
Some know where to report wrong doers too..?
So following up in the time honoured vain of we, the readers, are responsible for our own safety out there in the big blue www.
How about an article on the action to take when url xxx.xxxetc.. scans us or a Joe bloggs sends unwittingly an email with a virus attachment.
I can give you a title 'Good Nettiquette' it could include the standard don'ts as well as what to do.
Pretty Please.

Malc, the quickest way to get info is to query the whois database. Put the ip address in and you'll get your info.

Why bother

If you have a good router with firewall and maybe extra firewall software. Turn off services not required ( I appreciate thats a bit hard for windows) and screw things down tight, then why should you chase after someone in South America where the law does not care. Surely we all have better things to do with our time
I know I have. It may be, a don't care attitude, but how many crackers get done and does it really hurt them, I doubt it very much.

Yeah Gentoo
I appreciate your sentiments, but then again you probably know a lot of good nettiquette, Others including me, currently surfing using Linux OS with Mozilla browser still feel there is more to learn. Cap'n Cad was really helful.
The fact that I couldn't make head nor tail ofthe whois this website was either my fault or lack of being told how to read it?
I still think a brush up on good nettiqette might do not just newbies some good.

There are two types of crackers in this world.

Firstly kids who dont understand the implications of what they are doing, and need a good spank on the a*se, not a prison sentence.

Secondly, experts who you arent going to catch because even if they went through your entire system, you woudnt even notice.

Its possible to spoof IP adresses and all other forms of identification on the internet. So chances are when you resolve the details and geographical position of the person, they are fake anyway.

On the other hand, i think a article on nettiqette is a great idea. Theres loads of things i dont know about "internet customs" and stuff. And you can get shot down in places like IRC in one second flat if you arent up on these things.
