Would anyone recommend getting an Apple iBook or just a regular laptop. I want a portable solution that I will be able to hook up to my home network wirelessly (802.11g). I also want to be able to do word processing on it.

As you have been posting elsewhere on building a "swept up" PC, you have to keep to PC operating systems and programs. Imacs are very pretty, work well, but, generally speaking, get on with PCs like diesel in a petrol motor!

| An iBook is perfect for your needs, as would be a PowerBook. I use a PowerBook G4 17" as my main machine.

The current crop of i-books are pretty good and have wireless as standard. At work it literally takes my powerbook i click to join the wireless internet router. As for windows sharing that's something I haven't mastered. The mac side is easy with IP addresses etc. but the PC side is cumbersome. Last night I had windows sharing (samba server) running on my mac while on the internet and someone from japan was trying to use it as an exploit. Looks like windows shares aren't so secure! - still the built in firewall dealt with it.
Either way, the i-book is perfect for tapping out a letter, and has the ilife apps if you want to do other things. The currently version of office for mac is also really good and seems less buggy than the 2003 PC version we use at work.
